The Nanshan National Park is located in the southwest of Hunan Province, at the intersection of Yuecheng Ridge and Xuefeng Mountain south section. The park is the birthplace and conservation area of the Dongting Lake water system in the Yangtze River Basin and the important main stream of the Xijiang River in the Pearl River Basin, with a total area of 1,303.80 square kilometers.
As one of the first 10 pilot projects of a plan for the establishment of a national park system, the Nanshan National Park offers protection for endangered wildlife including forest musk deer, scaly-sided merganser, tragopan caboti, and elliot's pheasant and their habitats, as well as for Abies ziyuanensis, Chinese yew, and other rare plants and their communities. The park is a typical representative of the central subtropical forest ecosystem; a model displaying the prime period of China Danxia, a World Natural Heritage Site; and an important area of the ecological barrier in the southern hilly and mountainous areas.
